How MoWP Works
Youth preparing to age out of care between ages 16-18 can self refer or be referred by community agencies, caseworkers or interested individuals. Participants will be required to register and complete an intake form to be formally enrolled in the 1.5 hour/week learning program. Upon completion, youth are matched with trained mentors to work with them one-on-one on a weekly basis (or as directed by the needs of the youth) for up to two (2) years. This helps to build sustained supportive relationships, which has been identified to be of significant importance and salient to successful transition and positive life outcomes with former system youth. (Osgood, Foster, & Courtney, 2010).
The mentors work with youth to address identified capacity and skill gaps in four (4) key areas of life:
- Education / Training
- Employment / Career
- Relationships and Wellness
- Peer Support and Community Service
